Olympic Medal Design Competition
This was an international competition held by the International Olympic Committee with participation from over 3,000 people from 120 countries. The winning proposal was officially chosen as the medal awarded at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics. Under the motto 'Growing together, shining forever,' my project was titled 'A Bright Future.'
In this design, vertical lines are used to convey the idea of growth, while other elements, created through cutouts and changes in finish, represent the diverse group of people participating in the Olympic Games.
The variety of shapes demonstrates diversity and how we can contribute from different backgrounds to peace and coexistence, while the polished finishes create dynamic sparks of light, symbolizing our desire to surpass ourselves and make positive changes in the world.
In this proposal, I had two guidelines in mind: the first is that I did not want the medal to be like a frame for a painting, merely there to be observed, creating a passive relationship with the observer. I wanted it to be treated as a sculpture. A sculpture you can pick up and view from various angles. The artwork is alive and interacts with the user.
The second guideline is to work with materiality. In architecture, we learn that you don't understand a building just by looking at it. You have to enter the building, experience it, touch it to understand how the materiality works. The medal is made of metal, which can have various finishes, such as polished or matte. And I wanted this polished part to be the protagonist of the medal. The glimmers of the 'bright future'.
